iOS 26 Video Streaming to CarPlay: What You Need to Know
Author: Toby Date Posted:8 August 2025
Apple made headlines in early June 2025 when it announced that iOS 26 will bring video streaming capabilities to CarPlay. Yes, Apple’s finally doing it — sort of. The long-requested feature will allow iPhone users to stream videos directly to their car’s infotainment screen using AirPlay. But before you plan your next Netflix binge from the driver’s seat, there’s a catch (a sensible one, at least).
AirPlay Video Comes to CarPlay – But Only When Parked
Apple’s latest update introduces AirPlay video support for CarPlay, allowing iPhone users to stream videos from their device straight to the CarPlay screen. Think YouTube, live sports, or maybe a cheeky TikTok session while waiting at the servo.
The feature is designed with safety in mind. Video playback will only work when the vehicle is stationary. The moment your iPhone detects movement — even a gentle roll — the stream cuts out automatically. No distractions on the road, just entertainment when you’re parked.
It’s a move similar to what Tesla’s been doing for years with its Theater Mode, where drivers can stream content while charging or parked. Now, Apple users with CarPlay won’t be left out of the fun.
Why It’s a Big Deal for EV Owners and Weekend Warriors
Let’s be honest — no one enjoys sitting around while the car charges or waiting for someone to finish up shopping. For EV drivers especially, this update brings some welcome downtime entertainment. Park up, cue the next footy highlights, and kick back while the battery juices up.
It’s also handy for families on road trips or tradies catching a break between jobs. As long as you’re not moving, it turns your centre display into a makeshift entertainment unit.
When Will It Be Available?
That’s where things get a bit murky. While the feature is part of the iOS 26 developer beta, it won’t be instantly available to all users. Automakers will need to opt-in and support CarPlay with AirPlay video, and that may take some time.
Additionally, developers must be part of Apple’s MFi (Made for iPhone) Program to enable AirPlay video in their apps. So it’s a staged rollout — some newer vehicles (and likely those with CarPlay Ultra support) will see the update sooner than others.
If your current setup doesn’t support CarPlay or you’re due for an upgrade, Superspares offers a range of Apple CarPlay head units that are ready for the latest features — including premium models from Alpine, Kenwood, and Sony.
Other CarPlay Tweaks in iOS 26
Streaming aside, Apple’s also added some smaller but nifty features:
- Pinned conversations and Tapbacks in Messages
- Home screen widgets
- Live Activities (like flight tracking or delivery updates)
Nothing groundbreaking, but it’s nice to see CarPlay getting more attention.
Is It Worth Waiting For?
If you’re the kind of driver who spends a lot of time parked — whether at work sites, charging stations, or waiting for school pickup — this could be a game-changer. It’s not just about entertainment either — think live pressers, sport updates, or training videos on the go (while not moving, of course).
It also signals Apple’s growing push into the in-car experience — something we’re keeping a close eye on.
