Permatex Sealants, Adhesives & Gasket Makers

A weeping sealing surface is one of the most frustrating comebacks in a workshop, because it means stripping the job back down to fix something that should have been right the first time. Usually the cause is the wrong product rather than a bad technique — a general-purpose silicone where an anaerobic sealant was needed, or a sensor-safe requirement that got ignored. Permatex has been making sealants and adhesives since 1909, and the range is deliberately specific about what goes where. At Superspares we stock it.

The Right Chemistry for the Joint

Sealants are not interchangeable, and the differences are not cosmetic. RTV silicones cure with moisture and stay flexible, which suits flanged joints that move and expand. Anaerobic sealants cure in the absence of air between tight metal-to-metal surfaces, which is a completely different job. Thread sealants keep pressurised fluid from tracking along a thread; threadlockers stop the fastener backing out.

Permatex's range is organised around those distinctions rather than blurring them, and the products are colour and name coded so the right one is easy to identify on a shelf. That specificity is the reason it has stayed the default in workshops for over a century.

The Permatex Range

Use our on-page filters to find the product for your joint. Check sensor compatibility before choosing an RTV.

RTV Silicone Gasket Makers: The core sealing range, including Ultra Blue sensor-safe RTV in 95g, Ultra Black, Ultra Copper for high-temperature applications and Ultra Grey for high-torque assemblies. Sensor-safe formulations matter on any modern engine with oxygen sensors.

The Right Stuff: The instant-gasket product that allows immediate reassembly and return to service rather than waiting for a full cure.

Thread Sealants and Threadlockers: PTFE thread sealants for pressurised fluid and air lines, high-temperature thread sealant, and threadlockers for fasteners that must not vibrate loose.

Anaerobic Gasket Makers: Flange sealants that cure between close-fitting metal surfaces, for rigid joints where an RTV would be squeezed out.

Repair Adhesives: Steel Weld and liquid metal filler for metal repairs, Plastic Weld for plastic components, contact cement and silicone adhesive sealant.

Specialty Products: Aviation Form-A-Gasket for fuel and oil-resistant joints, water pump sealant, and windscreen repair kits.

Choosing the Right Permatex Product

Permatex is a chemical range, so selection is by joint type and operating condition rather than by vehicle.

For flanged joints with some movement — rocker covers, sumps, timing covers — an RTV silicone is usually correct. On any engine with oxygen sensors, use a sensor-safe formulation, because standard RTVs can release compounds during cure that contaminate the sensor. For close-fitting rigid metal flanges, use an anaerobic sealant instead.

For threads, separate the two jobs. A thread sealant stops fluid tracking along the thread; a threadlocker stops the fastener rotating. They are different products and using one for the other's job will disappoint you.

Surface preparation does most of the work. Clean both faces back to bare metal, remove all old gasket material and degrease with a wax and grease remover or brake cleaner before applying anything. And observe the cure time on the pack — the most common sealant failure is reassembling and pressurising before the product has cured.

FAQ
What is the difference between an RTV silicone and an anaerobic sealant?
RTV silicone cures on exposure to moisture in the air and stays flexible, which suits flanged joints that move or expand with heat. Anaerobic sealant cures in the absence of air, between close-fitting metal surfaces, and suits rigid metal-to-metal flanges. Using an RTV on a tight metal flange usually means it gets squeezed out and the joint weeps.
